BEFORE HE WAS HANGED South Africa's Solomon Kalushi Mahlangu said "My blood will nourish the tree that will bear the fruits of freedom. Tell my people that I love them. They must continue the fight, Aluta Continua" Mahlangu's trial started in the Supreme Court on 7 November 1977. He was defended by two advocates, Messrs Ismail Mohamed,  S.C.  and Clifford Mailer. They faced two counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder and various counts under the Terrorism Act. In its judgment the court found that Mahlangu and Motaung had acted with a common purpose and that it consequently did not matter which of the two had done the shooting and killing. Mahlangu was convicted on all counts. In terms of the South African law, the court was obliged to sentence an accused to death for murder, unless the accused proved mitigating circumstances. The court found that Mahlangu had failed to do so, and consequently handed down the  death sentence . The court refused...

The man's pose has nothing to do with the activity he was engaged in before dying, according to a volcanologist who studies the Pompeii victims. "The individual in the photo is an adult man, killed by the hot pyroclastic surge (hot gas and ash cloud which killed most of the population living around Mount Vesuvius), with both arms and legs flexed due to the heat," Pier Paolo Petrone told the Daily Dot. Petrone told the Daily Dot that “most of the human victims found in Pompeii often show ‘strange’ position of arms and legs, due to the contraction of limbs as a consequence of the heat effect on their bodies after death occurred.” But even without a masturbatory caption, people couldn't help but imagine something else going on in the photo. "I'm sure he had a good eruption before the end," said one commenter on Instagram. A few weeks later, a black and white version of the image was tweeted by @PersianRose1 with the false caption. It instantly began...

On September 16, 1976, world-champion finswimmer Shavarsh Karapetyan was finishing a 13-mile training run in Armenia when he suddenly heard a disturbing sound.  A trolleybus had fallen over a dam wall and plunged into Yerevan Lake.  The 23-year-old immediately sprinted to the scene, stripped down, and dove into the sewage-strewn water to save as many people as possible. Despite near-zero visibility, Karapetyan swam 15 feet down to reach the trolleybus only to discover there was no open window. So, he decided to kick the rear window out, lacerating his legs in the process.  Over the next 20 minutes, Karapetyan managed to bring 37 people to the surface, 20 of whom survived. Another nine escaped on their own through the window he'd broken open.  Karapetyan's heroism left him with permanently-scarred lungs after he developed pneumonia, and he spent the next three weeks in a hospital bed before he could walk again.  But the following year, he p...

Putin's commanders are slaughtering their wounded soldiers rather than retrieving them from the battlefield for medical treatment, Ukraine claims Russian army commanders are allegedly slaughtering their own wounded soldiers instead of retrieving them from the battlefield for treatment, Russian soldiers have reportedly said. According to Ukranian intelligence, captured Russian soldiers accused a lieutenant-colonel of personally shooting dead multiple troops as they lay injured instead of taking them alive to be treated in Russia. The revelation comes as investigations in the horror town of Bucha revealed 650 civilians were shot rather than hit by shelling in what Ukrain police say proves they were executed by Russian thugs. Young Russian army intelligence troops captured by the Ukrainians are shown speaking in a new video clip made by Ukrainian journalist Volodymyr Zolkin who has chronicled Russian captives. One soldier in the video told how commanders had 'finishe...

Sweden announces it will apply to join NATO The Swedish government has confirmed it intends to apply for membership of Nato, joining neighboring Finland in a similar decision following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to date. “There is a broad majority in Sweden’s parliament for Sweden to join Nato,” said the prime minister, Magdalena Andersson. “This is the best thing for the security of Sweden and its people … We are leaving one era behind us and entering a new one.” Andersson told reporters after a parliamentary debate on Monday that Sweden would be “in a vulnerable position” while the application was processed, but that ministers saw no direct military threat from Russia at present.  However, the government “can’t exclude that we will be subjected, for example, to disinformation and attempting to scare and divide us”, Andersson said, adding that if its application was approved, Sweden would not want permanent Nato military bases ...

Their sister Iryna escaped because she was in a neighbour's house at the time. "Slam! And the blood flow...

Finland's president and prime minister, Sauli Niinisto announced support for joining NATO on Thursday, May 12 moving the country a step closer to joining the US-led military alliance. Finland shares a 800-mile border with Russia and one of the reasons Russia gave for invading Ukraine was to stop Ukraine, a close neighbor of Russia from joining NATO.   In the joint statement, Niinisto and Swedish Prime Minister Marin said: "NATO membership would strengthen Finland's security. As a member of NATO, Finland would strengthen the entire defence alliance. Finland must apply for NATO membership without delay. We hope that the national steps still needed to make this decision will be taken rapidly within the next few days." The Kremli...
